It’s quite tough to experience migraine attacks regularly. It can impact some parts of your life, including work, family, and even your ability to socialize. Some patients who suffer from chronic migraine episodes also develop mental health disorders.

If you struggle with such a debilitating condition, finding lasting migraine relief in Encinitas should be your top priority. This way, you get to regain control of your life and suffer from less frequent attacks.

Also, it will be good for you if you know the key signs to look out for before a migraine episode starts. By knowing these symptoms, you can prepare and manage your condition. Read on to learn about the nine warning signs of a looming migraine episode.

  1. Visual or sensory auras

Around 30 percent of migraineurs experience visual or sensory auras before an attack. Some of the common symptoms you might encounter include seeing zigzag lines, spots or flashes of lights, and feeling tingling or numbness on your face, arms and fingers. These warning symptoms often last for a couple of minutes, but they can easily stretch to a few hours.

  1. Problems with sleep

Quality sleep is essential in maintaining all kinds of body processes. As a migraineur, getting enough sleep at night is extra crucial to the improvement of your condition. Unfortunately, most people who have migraine attacks also suffer from sleeplessness. Most of the time, this results in an endless cycle of pain.

If you want to experience migraine relief in Encinitas, you’ll need to find ways to improve your sleep. Some remedies you can try include avoiding alcohol or caffeine before bedtime and using relaxing essential oils like lavender extract.

  1. Eye pain

Many patients report pain near or behind one of their eyes. It's quite common among migraineurs and others who experience tension headache, eyestrain, or sinusitis. Some only report mild and tolerable pain, while others experience visual disturbances such as double or blurry vision. If you have a basilar migraine, you might also notice other signs like impaired vision or visual aura before an episode.

  1. Nausea and vomiting

Research revealed that nausea occurs in more than 90 percent of migraineurs, while roughly 70 percent also experience vomiting. Sometimes they occur before an attack. But, most of the time, patients experience these two symptoms during and after an episode.

  1. Allergy symptoms like nasal congestion

Believe it or not, some migraineurs experience symptoms similar to an allergic reaction. These include a congested nose, runny nose, watery eyes. and droopy eyelids. That’s why some folks have mistaken their migraine episode for a sinus headache.

If you’re stuck in the exact problem, you can check for other symptoms like nausea and visual aura. If you have both of these symptoms, you’re headache primarily stems from a migraine attack.

  1. Neck pain

Besides causing a throbbing sensation in your head, a migraine episode also tends to occur with neck pain. Often, migraineurs notice neck pain that radiates to the shoulders. Studies explain that this sensation occurs as a result of increased pain sensitivity among people who have migraines.

As a result, those who need migraine relief in Encinitas seek upper cervical. It’s one of the increasingly popular remedies for neck pain as well as migraine attacks.

  1. Excessive yawning

Yawning doesn’t always indicate tiredness. For 36 percent of migraineurs, excessive yawning serves as an indicator of an impending migraine episode. If you notice this sign, you should start preparing for a possible attack. Stay in a cool and dim-lit area and avoid contact with common triggers like loud sounds and certain scents.

  1. Frequent trips to the bathroom

Have you ever noticed frequent urination before your migraine starts wreaking havoc? It turns out this problem happens to many migraine sufferers. This is why the American Headache Society recognizes it as a symptom of a migraine's premonitory phase. Besides frequent peeing, you might also experience a bit of pelvic pain.

  1. Mood swings and speech problems

As we’ve mentioned earlier, migraines can affect mental health. The effects of the condition, such as decreased productivity, impaired cognitive function, and constant battling with pain, can take a toll on your psychological well-being. It can occur along with mood swings, depression, and anxiety attacks. You might also have difficulties in expressing yourself verbally.

Triggering Factors You Should Avoid

Managing chronic and intense migraine episodes take more than seeking natural remedies. It will also require you to pay close attention to the factors that trigger or aggravate your condition. Below are some of the notable examples of migraine triggers:

Astaxanthin - although it is difficult to pronounce, this powerful antioxidant has been touted by many of the top researchers in the world as quite possibly the most potent antioxidant nature has to offer!  Continuous research is suggesting that this form of algae has broad-spectrum, system-wide health benefits. So let’s learn how this supplement supports: joint and tendon health, skin health, eye and brain health, and cardiovascular health.

It is derived from Haematococcus microalgae.  Astaxanthin is produced within the algae to protect itself from UV radiation and the harsh effects of the surrounding environment.    It is related to beta-carotene, lutein and canthaxanthin. However, what makes it unique is its molecular structure. Astaxanthin has deservedly been named “The King of Carotenoids”.  While you may not be completely familiar with carotenoids, most likely you have consumed them in the food you recently ate. Carotenoids are what gives many of the healthy foods you eat their color:  the lycopene in the red tomato, the beta-carotene in orange carrots, or the zeaxanthin and lutein in yellow corn.

Astaxanthin is an antioxidant.  It is known to be over 500 times stronger power than vitamin E and 6,000 times more potent than vitamin C

Some key differences that set astaxanthin apart from other carotenoids and antioxidants include the following:

ASTAXANTHIN PROMOTES SKIN HEALTH

Every day in the Encinitas Chiropractor office I teach that it is not only what you put onto the skin to protect it, but more importantly what you put INTO it, and that is the strong point about astaxanthin.  Recent buzz with the rich and famous around natural astaxanthin has increased its profile. More and more people are learning what most dermatologists have long known; natural astaxanthin helps support the skin during long periods of UV light exposure.  Sunburns occur from excess skin oxidation. Ultraviolet like causes oxidation of skin cells and results in reddening. Excessive and repeated exposure to sunlight without the proper nutrients to support it causes skin aging: wrinkled, blotchy, thinned, darkened skin.  A recent study of the effects of astaxanthin, scientists took a group of people to see how much UV light was needed to cause a “sunburn”. The test group was given 4 mg of natural astaxanthin for 14 days. The results were that the group treated with astaxanthin increased the amount of time it took to redden the skin and cause excessive oxidation (Lorenz, 2002).

Remember, the key to building and maintaining health is to stack the odds in your favor.  I commonly teach patients that they are not victims of bad luck, bad germs, or bad genes. I teach them that they have more control over their health outcomes than they are being lead to believe by mainstream healthcare.  The secret is to consistently provide your body with the nourishment it needs to continue to adapt, rebuild, and thrive. The human body seems to be designed to heal itself! In fact, your body happens to be the smartest doctor in the world.  I say, give it what it needs, avoid things that it doesn’t, and then GET OUT OF THE WAY! Astaxanthin is just another powerful tool your body will benefit from. The great Dr. James Chestnut put it perfectly when he said “Eat Well, Move Well, Think Well!”

Take control of your health and be proactive.  True health comes from within and it will always be that way.  You can either accept it and use it to your advantage or you can struggle like most Americans with chronic degenerative diseases that in most cases can be prevented with proper lifestyle and dietary choices!

TMJ EncinitasYour Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your mandible to the temporal bones of the skull.  It is a hinge joint that also has a disc. It is fairly moveable and allows you to move your jaw in almost every range of motion.

The medical community will claim that the cause of Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are “unknown”.  You will that it may be genetic or that one must live with the pain. Science shows that these disorders are like most other processes that occur in the body - multifactorial.  Pain syndromes may arise from direct trauma, overuse, soft-tissue injury, neurological disorders, dental problems, upper spine misalignment, and/or a combination of many of these.  We find that a combination of issue are contributing to our patient’s TMJ problem.

The most effective treatment for people experiences TMD will always be as one that both address the surface level symptom as well as tackling the underlying cause.

How can Chiropractic help with TMJ Pain?

Chiropractors have long been helping people suffering with jaw and facial pain.  By alleviating tension and dysfunction in the spine, especially the upper cervical spine, normal nerve conduction occurs. Here at K2 Health Center, we look at this problem through a different lense. The muscles of the jaw are controlled through the 5th cranial nerve. Sensory innervation of the TMJ comes from the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve.  When an individual experiences a car accident or other trauma it can misalign the top vertebra in the neck, C1 or Atlas. Nerve pressure and muscle tone imbalances ensue, which effects the trigeminal cervical nucleus, which in turn negatively effects the trigeminal nerve, which in turn negatively effects the TMJ! Taking pressure off of the nerves can help decrease pain and more importantly fix the root cause.

As for the cervical spine, there are several things that need to be determined:

1) Does the patient have a misalignment of the skull on the neck and/or C1 and C2?  If so, how is the causing interference to their central nervous system?

2) 3D Digital Xrays are taken to view and analyze each individuals neck alignment, joint angles, and magnitude of misalignment down to 1/10 of a degree.

Once these factors are determined and taking in all other information regarding what could be contributing to TMD, a precise correction is made to the neck using a sound-wave instrument to gently realign the misaligned vertebra exactly into place.

While we do not claim that upper cervical chiropractic is some sort of a cure-all, we are confident that it is based in science and is extremely low risk when compared to drugs and surgery.

If you suffer with TMJ pain and have tried other forms of treatment without much success, it may be time to look deeper.  The junction where you head meets your neck is commonly labeled the “bottleneck” of neurology. It is where the brain is turning into the spinal cord.  ALL the nerves from your brain must fit into hole the size of a quarter and must be completely uninterrupted. You may just find that your head isn’t on straight! No big deal, give us a chance and let us fix it for you!
